To bridge the gap between LDS church requirements for meetinghouse or temple artwork and skills of artists who are interested in contributing to more inclusive depictions of Christ, scripture stories, or religious artwork. We have great respect for various cultural styles of art; we love having them part of our organization’s art shows. We want artists from around the world to still paint in their personal style. Below we list the requirements for current church artwork though, and we want to bridge this gap until church leaders change stylistic guidelines.
Meetinghouse guidelines for building artwork are that it should create a spiritual, reverent atmosphere. The artwork should be of high artistic quality and depict the life and images of Christ and His ministry with dignity and reverence. It should teach gospel principles with clarity through easily recognizable illustrations of the scriptures, and portray meaningful aspects of the Restoration of the gospel and the history and heritage of the Church. It should also reflect gospel-centered values and lifestyle. If you lean towards a more realistic or naturalistic style, not abstract, this might be a good fit for your interests. (source)
Recipients of Meetinghouse Mosaic Artist Scholarships must be BIPOC artists interested in contributing to more inclusive gospel artwork to Christian homes or meetinghouses. We would need applicants to fill out this survey and then submit what they would use the money towards if they received the scholarship.
We can offer each artist who qualifies a scholarship of $200-$500 with a breakdown of funds decided with each participant. This year, we can offer 5 scholarships.
